  4.     Months of deepening tension between its bitterly divided
  5. national republics and ethnic groups have brought Yugoslavia
  6. dangerously close to civil war. In the autonomous province of
  7. Kosovo, striking ethnic Albanian lead and zinc miners protesting
  8. a strident campaign by Serbians to tighten their grip touched
  9. off a wave of demonstrations. Tens of thousands of ethnic
  10. Albanians joined the strike, forcing the resignations of
  11. provincial Communist Party boss Rahman Morina and other
  12. officials considered to be puppets of Serbia.

  14.     In Belgrade half a million resentful Serbs chanting "Kosovo
  15. is Serbian!" demanded a drastic expansion of their control over
  16. the province and stiff retaliatory measures against the ethnic
  17. Albanian majority. The spiraling unrest drove Raif Dizdarevic ,
  18. leader of Yugoslavia's collective presidency, to dispatch
  19. paramilitary units and tanks into Kosovo while banning all
  20. public gatherings. The unrest also exacerbated the rift between
  21. Serbia and the republic of Slovenia.
